FAQs about Therapy With AB & Insurance

  • If you think we are a good fit, please reach out to me at alanabarlia@intuitivehealingnyc.com to set up your initial consultation. This is a totally complimentary 15 minute phone call with me to learn more about your hopes for therapy and to see if we are the right fit!

From there, we will set up an intake appointment where we will assess further if we are the right fit for one another, we will go over what therapy will look like, paperwork, procedures, and I will begin gathering information on you and your life story.

The following few sessions will be about learning your history, learning about you, and setting intentions for the therapeutic work.

  • I offer the flexibility of conducting sessions both in-person and virtually. You have the choice of traditional face-to-face meetings in my welcoming office in Midtown, which provides a safe, personalized, and direct interaction. Alternatively, virtual sessions are available to accommodate geographical constraints, scheduling preferences, and other considerations. Through secure online platforms, we can ensure a seamless and effective therapeutic experience.

*Please note that while I aim to do what suits your style and comfort, there are cases in where I would recommend in-person therapy depending on the type of therapeutic work you are hoping to do. In-person slots are limited, so please inquire when you reach out.

  • Sessions for individuals are $200 per 50-minute session. Sessions for couples are $230 per 60-minute session.

In accordance with my personal values, I allocate a limited number of sliding scale slots that are determined by financial need.

  • I accept all major credit cards, cash, checks, and I am more than happy to accept FSA cards.

If you are seeking insurance reimbursement, please check with your provider to see if you have "out-of-network" benefits, as I do not take insurance. I will provide superbills (a receipt) for you to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.

  • Like most specialty providers, I do not participate in insurance plans, nor am I considered “in-network”.
    I am an out-of-network provider.

  • If you have out-of-network coverage for mental health services, you may be eligible for reimbursement for some, or all, of the cost of your sessions. I am able to provide superbills (i.e. itemized receipts) for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Many insurance companies provide out-of-network coverage to offset the costs of therapy.

To find out if you have out-of-network benefits for mental health, it is in your best interest to check your coverage carefully by asking your provider the following questions:

    – “Does my plan include out-of-network benefits for mental health care? Specifically, for outpatient psychotherapy?”

    – “Is approval required from my primary care doctor?”

    – “What is my "co-insurance?"

    – “Do I have a deductible for out-of-network mental health services? If yes, what is the remaining amount I will have to pay before my health plan starts to reimburse me for fees that I pay out-of-pocket?”

    – “How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?”

    – “What is the maximum amount my plan will reimburse for mental health service code 90834 (individual) or 90847 (couples) with a psychotherapist?”

*In instances where “out-of-network” benefits are covered, you will be responsible for payment at the time of service. Your insurance will reimburse your expenses afterwards.

  • First and foremost, privacy.

Paying out of pocket offers several advantages, with privacy being a primary benefit. Insurance companies typically demand extensive documentation for payment, potentially jeopardizing confidentiality. As a private pay option, you can rest assured that I won't disclose your information to anyone. Treatment decisions, such as duration, frequency, and type of therapy, may be influenced by insurance companies. Opting for private payment eliminates caps or limits on therapeutic work, providing ample opportunities for gradual exploration, deepening, and personal growth over the years.

Additionally, insurance often necessitates a "medical necessity" criterion, requiring a DSM V diagnosis for covered care. While we can explore and integrate diagnoses if beneficial for your healing journey, there's no need to pathologize your experience to provide assistance. For those valuing increased privacy and treatment flexibility, paying out of pocket may be a more suitable option
